New data from yappy.com has revealed the dogs that are most likely to be spoiled and pampered by their owners according to their breed and where they live across the US pup-lation

Personalized gift shop, yappy.com, has revealed the dog breeds that are most likely to be spoiled by their owners according to where they live across the US. The study includes over 300 popular breeds and spans 450,000 individual pet profiles to unveil the pooches that are most likely to be treated with the most accessories, gifts, bandanas and other treats.

The most spoiled dog breeds in the US by region

These are the most spoiled dog breeds across the US regions based on the highest average spend by their besotted owners.

In the West, the Shetland Sheepdog or ‘Sheltie’ is the most spoiled dog breed according to the research. This beautiful and energetic breed is highly-intelligent and needs lots of exercise, making them ideal pets for outdoor-loving active families who love to take a hike or two. Shelties have gorgeous double coats to protect them from the harsh elements of the Scottish Highlands from where they originated.

The Dobermann is the most likely to be pampered with treats in the Midwest. Known for their watchdog abilities, this breed is always on alert and ready to protect their owners. Actress and entrepreneur Kate Hudson has recently adopted a ‘Dobie’ to add to the star’s fur-family including Cody, an Australian Shepherd and Walter, a Shih Tzu.

In the South East, the Labradoodle takes the biscuit and is most likely to be spoiled with treats. Best known for its low-shedding coat, intellect of a Labrador and sociable nature, the Labradoodle is a popular choice for families. Celebrity owners of this designer breed include Jennifer Aniston and Bradley Cooper.

The Beagle is the most pampered pooch in the South West according to yappy.com’s data. These happy-go-lucky dogs are famed for their super sense of smell and are used in over 20 international airports to help sniff out contraband. With an unusually loud bark to boot, this breed isn’t afraid to make themselves heard if needed! Celebrity owners include Jake Gyllenhaal, who owns Boo, a Pug and Beagle mix.

In the North East, the Australian Shepherd has been revealed as the most spoiled breed in the region. Despite its name, this breed originates from Western US and was developed to herd livestock at the time of the Gold Rush in the 1940s. Hardworking and always looking for a job to do, the Australian Shepherd is a working dog at heart – deserving of treats and rewards for being such a loyal helper.

In New York City, the Shih Tzu came out as the most spoiled breed of all in the city, with owners spending more on this breed than any other during the study period. The origins of this Chinese breed are a little unclear, but it’s thought that they were developed by Tibetan Monks. In Buffalo, the cheeky Chihuahua came out top and in Yonkers, the Boxer is the most pampered pooch of all the 300 breeds studied.

This beautiful and energetic breed is highly-intelligent and a perfect fit for outdoor-loving dog owners who enjoy long hikes - allowing Shelties to roam and use their herding instincts, developed from their Scottish Highland origins where they herded livestock.

In Charlotte, Siberian Husky owners spoil their dogs the most and in Raleigh, the Basset Hound takes the biscuit as the top spoiled dog breed in the city.

A survey carried out by yappy.com's pet community of 57k Instagram followers showed that 62% of dog owners have personalized a gift especially for their pooch in the past year, with popular choices including bandanas, pillows, leashes, collars and blankets featuring their dog’s name, breed and individual profile.

It seems that there are no limits to how far dog parents will go when shopping for their fur babies with respondents listing gifts including a designer jacket, a puppy stroller, monthly haircuts and other grooming at a puppy spa, a $300 bespoke bean bag, a massage bed, an indoor dog house, a personalized suitcase, a Louis Vuitton collar, a Prada handbag, an orthopaedic bed, an iPad, a treadmill and an ultrasonic toothbrush.

Yappy.com's founder John Smith said: “Every dog deserves to be spoiled and enjoy the ‘ulti-mutt‘ best life possible and our findings show which regions, states and cities are treating their dogs the most and the breeds that are the most likely to be indulged by dog lovers. We've delved into our data to discover who the most pampered pooches are according to their owner’s average spend per breed, name and where they live across the US.

"Dog lovers are increasingly spoiling their pets and treating their fur babies as human members of the family. This desire to give our dogs a life of luxury that they truly deserve and access to the best quality products possible, is driving sales of indulgent gifts that enhance your pet's life in new and creative ways.

The most spoiled dogs of the US data was collated over the last 12 months from May 2020 – May 2021 and studied 300 popular breeds and over 450,000 individual dog profiles generated across yappy.com. By looking at the highest average spend per breed and by region, the data reveals the overall most pampered dogs in the US according to their breed, name and where they live. The study also reveals the least spoiled names according to yappy.com’s data only – it doesn’t mean that these dogs aren’t as loved and adored by their owners as the others!
