3 Ways to Celebrate National Dog Biscuit Day

We’re not taking the biscuit. 23rd February really is a day dedicated to dog biscuits! And your pup will be very pleased to see you’ve remembered.

It’s time to spill the tea on dog biscuits and share everything you need to know about National Dog Biscuit Day, including yummy ways to celebrate with your pup.

Reasons to love dog biscuits:

  • They’re great for motivating your dog

  • They can have excellent health benefits

  • You can easily make them at home!

Let’s look at where dog biscuits come from and ways to celebrate National Dog Biscuit Day with your canine companion.

Where did dog biscuits come from?

It’s worth noting that this pawliday was created as a fun, light-hearted way to celebrate your dog’s favorite thing in the world. No, not you… dog biscuits!

But who cooked up your dog’s favorite thing?

You and your four-legged friends have an American businessman named James Spratt to thank.

It’s believed that in the mid-19th century, during a visit to Liverpool Docks, UK, Spratt noticed a group of stray dogs tucking into leftover biscuits from a ship and this sparked his delectable idea of making biscuits specifically for dogs.

Today, the market for dog biscuits is much more competitive. With an ever-growing demand, there’s a huge variety of treats available, including specialized biscuits which support your dog’s health.

Dog biscuits as motivation

Dog biscuits can be great for dog training, as they encourage dogs to follow instructions and teach them to be obedient in return for a reward.

This is often how show dogs and working dogs are initially trained, as the incentive for their good behaviour is a tasty treat!

A dog biscuit a day keeps the dog-tor away

National Dog Biscuit Day doesn’t have to just be celebrated with treats, although your dog won’t be complaining!

Did you know, that if eaten in moderation, dog biscuits can be introduced as part of a healthy balanced diet for your pooch? In fact, many biscuits include a multitude of nutrients, such as protein and fibre, which offer excellent health benefits.

Remember to choose biscuits that are full of natural ingredients and always read the recommended feeding guidelines to avoid overindulgence.
