These sturdy dogs are well-known for their extremely loyal and devoted ways towards their 'hoomans'. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs love nothing more than being in their home alongside their owners and will often follow you around the house, no matter what boring task you may be doing! Additionally, they are a very intelligent breed, which in turn means they are fairly easy to train but also means they need lots of mental stimulation. These pooches are very confident and alert and will always alert their owners to anything they don't like but get on with strangers, so long as their owners are around. They also make fairly good pets for first-time owners because they are so kind and gentle and for the right family will provide you with years of happiness and joy!

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are thought to be descendants of a group of dogs that were left in Switzerland by Romans, dating back over 2000 years! It's thought that the dogs that the Romans bought with them were then crossed with other herding dogs, native to the country to produce a dog similar to the one we see today! However, there is also another theory that they are actually descendants of dogs that the Phoenicia people took to Spain around 110BC and then that these guys somehow found their way to the Swiss Alps. Originally, they were used to pull carts to market, which continued on until the development of cars! And it's also thought that they were also bred to Saint Bernard's in order to improve the gene pool and create a healthier and stronger dog. During WW2, these dogs were used as military dogs and so, therefore, did not suffer too much during this difficult time as they were able to be put to good use. Since then, their popularity has grown throughout Europe but this does not mean that they aren't a rare breed and anyone interested in them would probably have to register their interest with local breeders.
