A nation of dog lovers

Woman cuddling her dog

Camera iconDog lovers are treating their fur babies as human members of the family

The UK’s love of dogs has never been stronger following a surge of pandemic-inspired pet ownership, and dog lovers new and old are indulging their pets in a variety of ways. According to the Pet Food Manufacturers Association, British dog owners splash a staggering £1.3 billion a year on their dogs to ensure ulti-mutt tail-wagging happiness for their faithful and constant companions.

A survey carried out by yappy.com's pet community of over 56k Instagram followers showed that 62% of dog owners have personalised a gift especially for their pooch, with popular choices including bandanas, beds, cushions, leads, collars and blankets.

It seems that there are no limits to how far pawrents would go when shopping for their fur babies with respondents listing gifts including a Burberry jacket, a puppy pushchair, monthly haircuts at a puppy spa, a £300 bespoke bean bag, a massage bed, an indoor dog house, a personalised suitcase, a Louis Vuitton collar, a Prada handbag, an orthopaedic bed, an ipad, a treadmill and an ultrasonic toothbrush.

Yappy.com's founder John Smith said: “Every dog deserves to be spoiled and enjoy the ‘ulti-mutt‘ best life possible and our findings show which cities and regions are doing the most treating and which breeds are the most likely to be indulged. Following the explosion of new dog owners during the past year, we've delved into our data to discover where the most pampered pooches are according to the average spend per breed, name and where their owners live across the UK.

"Dog lovers are increasingly spoiling their pets and treating their fur babies as human members of the family. This desire to give our dogs a life of luxury that they truly deserve and access to the best quality products and services possible is driving sales of indulgent products that enhance your pet's life like never before.

"Our e-commerce business has seen huge demand for unique, personalised dog gifts throughout the past year as owners increasingly look to spoil their dogs in new ways and mark their pet's birthday, gotcha day and even events such as Father's Day with a tailored card and gift to their pawrent."

The most spoiled dogs of the UK data was collated over the last 12 months from April 2020-April 2021 and studied 300 popular breeds and over 450,000 individual dog profiles generated across Yappy.com. By looking at the highest average spend per breed and by region, the data reveals the overall most pampered dogs in the UK according to their breed, name and where they live. The study also reveals the least spoiled breeds according to Yappy.com’s data only – it doesn’t mean that these breeds aren’t as loved and adored by their owners as the others!
