Smooth Collie Breed Summary
Intelligent, Loyal, Athletic, Loving and Protective
These dogs are well-known for their handsome looks and were originally bred to work as herding dogs, though their skills were not as strong as their counterpart, the Rough Collie. Nowadays, they are much better at protecting their families and they make lovely pets.
The only difference between these guys and their cousin counterpart is their coat. Although this is the only difference, they are still classed as separate breeds.
Fun Fact: Until 1994, a Smooth Collie was allowed to be bred to a Rough Collie and puppies from the same litter can have smooth or rough coats.

These dogs are known for being a highly intelligent and loyal breed who form extremely strong bonds with their families. Because of these traits they make a good choice for first time owners. Additionally, they are not as energetic as their other Collie relatives, which means they suit a variety of family types! They are partial to the sound of their own voices and if this isn't dealt with whilst they are puppies, it can become a real issue! These guys are true sports lovers and love to take part in all types of activities, including fly ball and agility courses. For the right family, they make excellent pets and have the ability to provide you with years of love and happiness!
Although we know that Smooth Collies are very historic, much of their history is unknown and largely a matter of speculation. Most experts think they are probably descendants of Shepherd dogs that were bought to Scotland by the Romans in the 5th century! Queen Victoria was a huge fan of the breed and purchased some in 1860 for her own kennel. From this point on they became a highly popular and fashionable dog to own. They are still considered a variety of the 'Rough Collie' in the USA and this means that they can be interbred but are considered different breeds in both Australia and the UK.
