The Pomchi is blessed with an affectionate and devoted personality that endears him to his family. This small dog however can be quite stubborn and assertive and will try to rule the household if he can get away with it. They need firm rules and positive training to understand that you are the pack leader, not them. These dogs respond well to training as they are very intelligent, but training has to be fun or their attention will wander.

The Pomchi likes to cuddle and enjoys all the attention you can give him. They are a house dog, and love company rather than being left alone. If they are left for several hours on their own, they may develop separation anxiety and bad habits can creep into their personality. These dogs can become very vocal if left alone which is unlikely to make you popular amongst the neighbors. The Pomchi adapts well to apartments (as long as you have trained them to stop barking after one bark) or they will enjoy a secure yard to explore. But what really makes them happy is to be with you, helping you in all that you do and playing the clown to make you laugh.

The Pomchi is a recent designer breed of dog and has no known history so we are left only with the history of the parent dogs. There is a disagreement as to where the Chihuahua originated - some say it was brought to Mexico by Spanish traders that hailed from China. Others state that they are a descendant of an ancient South American dog found in the 19th century which was called the Techichi. During the 1850s the short hair Chihuahua was first discovered in the Mexican State of Chihuahua, where they got their name. These small dogs were brought to America during the 1800s and were registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904. The Pomeranian was developed as a companion dog and originated in the province of Pomerania for which they were named. Originally a lot bigger in size (around 30 pounds) they were used for herding sheep, but become popular as a companion dog. Famous people such as Newton, Michelangelo, and Mozart enjoyed the company of the Pomeranian. A Princess from Pomerania married an English Prince during the 18th century and brought her two Poms with her. The rich became enamored with the Pom, especially Queen Victoria who began to breed them to be smaller, at around 12 pounds. After her death, other breeders further reduced their size and increased the color.
