PBGVs are very well known and affectionately referred to as the 'happy breed'. They have a true love for life and their enthusiasm makes them lovely, little family pets. They are relatively energetic and will need to be in a family that enjoys an active lifestyle! They are intelligent but require lots of training and socialization as they can be fairly stubborn. Additionally, they make very good watchdogs as they are alert and will tell their hoomans if anything unusual happens. Just bear in mind that these guys are prone to try and escape, so make sure you have a secure garden! Overall though, they make lovely family pets and have the ability to provide you with lots of years of happiness.

The terrain of the Vendée ain’t for sissy dogs. It takes a tough, tenacious, headstrong hound to earn a living as a hunter amid the rocks and dense underbrush of coastal France. The PBGV’s rough coat was purpose-bred to protect him from this harsh environment. Even the rakish eyebrows, beard, and mustache that give the breed a large measure of its Old World charm aren’t strictly for cuteness: They protect sensitive areas of the face from thorns and thicket.
