Much of the Curly Coated Retriever's history remains a mystery although there are records of a fairly similar dog that dates back to 1803! It's thought by some that they may be one of the first retrievers used for their retrieving skills in England! They were first shown in 1860 in the UK and a standard was written up in 1913! At the time, they were also one of the most popular family pets as well. Although we don't know which dogs were involved in the creation of this breed, it's speculated that they may be related to the Large Rough Water Dog, the Newfoundland and the Tweed Water Spaniel amongst many others! However, with the onset of WW1 and WW2, numbers dropped dramatically. And alongside the introduction of the Labrador, the breed suffered a fair bit!
